This is going to sound a little silly, but here goes; why not use the
universally available (in all programs that support block marking with
the mouse) method of block marking with the keyboard? By pressing the
Alternate + Insert key (holding it down) and then the arrow keys you
can mark a block. It is a little awkward at first, but it does have
the advantage of working with every keyboard and every program
currently available. (Is there a reason why this is a bad idea that
I do not know about?)
